A Day in the Death of Lilium Ackerman
Hot, hot, so hot. Just want to get out of here, need to get out, get everyone out. Hurts so much...
Wait.
I’m not hot anymore. This isn’t the volcano! It’s a field. Am I praying? I don’t remember praying, I’ve already done so today. But this field is all green grass and blue skies, like the ones from my prayers. I pull myself up and see that it is endless in all directions. I can go wherever I want, as far as I want. As usual, I start walking, with the sun on my face and a soft breeze in my hair. I never want to leave. The land dips and rises, if it was just flat it would be boring. Going down a slope, I lose my footing and fall...
And fall...
And fall.
It’s dark, so dark. I was just dreaming before, I’ve fallen down a crevasse, I must have fallen in volcano or something. It’s endless, completely endless, where’s the ground? Don’t care, don’t want to know, maybe there’s no floor, maybe I’ll fall forever, oh make this stop.
I’ve hit something! I’ve landed, oh it must hurt, I must be paralysed, I can’t feel any pain!
Just the touch of a soft feather pillow.
I’m bloody confused now.
I’m on a bed. My bed. Well it’s not really my bed, but it’s a bed in Granny’s house, back in the Barony. There’s the creak of wood under my feet as I get up. I never thought I’d miss that, but it’s a wonderful sound. Does that mean I’m home now?
“Granny?”
“In here dear.”
I run into the next room, and there is Granny, sitting at the table with a cup of tea. It would be a heartening sight, if it wasn’t for the windows. They let in the light, but there’s nothing outside. It's pitch black.
“What’s going on?”
Granny sighs. “Take a seat dear.”
“Don’t think I will thanks.”
“Suit yourself, so long as you’re sure. But you will have some tea, won’t you?” Granny pushes a plate of cakes towards me. They look wonderful and smell divine.
“I- I think I’ll pass.” That was so hard. Granny just smiles.
“You’ve grown.”
“Thanks, I guess. Still, what’s happened?”
“Are you sure you won’t take a seat, Lily dear? Or a cup of tea, a cup of tea always helps.”
“I’m fine. And it’s Lilium, you know I hate it when people call me Lily. What’s wrong?” I can’t help but start raising my voice. It’s not like Granny to be like this. Granny sighs again.
“It may be a bit of a shock.”
“Just tell me!”
“Okay then.” Granny places the teacup carefully on its saucer, and takes a deep breath.
“You’re dead.”
“I’m what?”
“Dead dear.”
“But, how am I here? This is back in the Barony! I was in a field before. No, wait, I was in a volcano. So I died there... Don’t tell me I got hit by a fireball.” I remember the heat again. It doesn’t last long, as I feel something dripping on my cheek. I wipe at it, but nothing’s there.
“No dear. You stretched yourself a bit too far and I couldn’t help you. You and I have been somewhat out of touch recently.”
“Of course we have, I’ve been in prison! You’ve been here! Wait, how do you know what exactly happened?” I put my hands in my pockets and frown. I could have sworn there were potions in there. “Why am I listening to you, if I’m dead? Wait, how am I listening to you if I’m dead?”
“Well, this is the place you’ll come to when you die. It’s on its own little plane and everything, it’s really quite pleasant.”
“But this is a house in real life, how is it here? How are you here?”
“Well it’s a house in real death too. It’s my house and I can take it wherever I like. As for how, well, you might really need to sit down.”
I can’t help but stare as Granny, a fairly diminutive old woman, is gone in a flash and is replaced by a much younger woman, complete with wings. She looks like a fae from a book, or perhaps a very human-looking demon. In the shock, I reach for my sword, but it’s not there. Is that a blue smudge on my coat?
“Who-“
“My name is Lilith. Now, you know that power of yours-“
“Yeah...”
“I think you’ll find that’s mine.”
“That means you’re a-“
“Goddess. Yes. How very astute of you dear.”
“No need to sound so sarcastic.”
“Well I did call you a few times, you just never listened.”
“ I was preoccupied?”
“Indeed. So it would seem. You do have quite a few problems. Some of them I may be responsible for in part. So, yes I am a goddess. Your goddess to be precise. I’m sure we’ll be chatting a lot more in the future. Hopefully not quite like this, but you’ll pop in to visit me now and then I expect. “
“So you were Granny all along?”
“Yes, but now I’m not. It might be a problem when you get back, because I’m not going to be there anymore. You’re a big girl now dear, I’m sure you’ll cope.”
“Yeah... Yeah.” I sit down at last. “But why did you bother?”
“Well it all started eleven years ago.”
“Wha-? Oh. OH.”
“Yes. As I said, some of your problems may be a fault on my part. That man used to be a follower of mine, may have let him get away with a little too much. Shan’t be doing that again, just to let you know. Well, you were just so cute and pathetic; I just had to have a look. Also, we have similar names, don’t you think that’s just so sweet? After what happened last year, I thought it would be best to step in. Nice slap by the way, you did see the scratch marks right? Lovely handiwork. He was such a beastly boy; I really don’t know what you saw in him. You’ve found much better people now, hmm?”
I’m not sure what, or rather who she’s insinuating, but I can’t help but blush.
“That’s really why I set you on your way, to meet new people, explore the world and all that. It’s turned out wonderfully.”
“I’m dead.”
“A minor setback dear. It won’t be for long anyway.”
“What do you mean?”
“Well you’re friends do seem quite determined to bring you back. I think they miss you quite a bit.”
I can’t help but smile. Outside, the world changes from the darkness, to a brilliant white.
“Ah! They seem to have crossed the border. You’re free now dear. Enjoy. Still, you’ll be here for a while, these things take time. Cake?”
“Don’t mind if I do.”
I can’t wait to see the others.

There are some bits in there which refer to background stuff that no one really knows, but ah well.
